Magic In Practice
『Practical Magic』time. Lessenar Magic Academy’s schoolyard consists of a spacious plot of land; not only is there a lake and a forest, there’s even a desert. That, which was constructed through the donations of the honorary consultant, Hazen, so that they can deal with any kind of situation, is occasionally used as the stage for Asch’s harsh training. Since there’s naturally no need for it normally, the practical is held on the sports field in front of that.
“Alright, everybody. Form groups of two, and try using the suitable Elemental Magic”
At the call of Jasper, the teacher-in-charge, the students cast their magic respectively. Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, Metal. Magic that makes use of the five elements that exist in nature, is typically called Elemental Magic.
And, neutralising the Elemental Magic the other party cast, using an opposing Elemental Magic, is the subject of the lesson this time around.
The competition to pair up with Liana is extraordinarily high. The girl tries to somehow pair up with Asch, who’s pretty much guaranteed to be by himself, but because most of the students start surrounding and fighting over her, she’s in a situation where that won’t come to fruition for the time being. Apart from them, fellow friends formed groups in pairs, but there was one more student, one who was unable to form a pair and frantically loitering around.
Her name is Jill＝Selgar. A beautiful young girl with light green medium-length hair, whose fringe that bared her entire forehead leaves a deep impression. With her short height and lovely meek facial features, she looks incredibly childish in this special class with a lot of 18 years old. She was banked on and selected for her profound magic knowledge, but her practical is hopeless. She’s the type of honour student that’s so-called all brains.
“Er, err……if, you don’t have a partner, may I have you pair up with me?”
Jill was the one who called out to Asch. Even if you give in a hundred steps and say that her inability to perform practical magic well is inevitable, being assessed as『unmotivated』by Jasper, the teacher-in-charge, will tie into an eviction from the special class. She usually pairs up with a girl who’s similarly not good with practical magic, but she’s, unluckily enough, absent today. Even if it’s against her wish, she has to pair up somehow and make the appeal that she did her best.
“Fuu……it can’t be helped huh”
“……”
‘Those are very much my words’, is the sentiment harboured by the diligent beautiful young girl.

When Jill chants and draws a Seal, a clump-sized flame heads at Asch.

Asch, too, manifests a huge pillar of ice and erases the flame.
“……haa, I can do fire just fine though”
The diligent beautiful young girl mutters frustratedly.

She chants and draws the Seal in a similar fashion, but nothing manifests. Her outstretched hand simply glows blue.
“Aah, as I thought……sorry”
Jil bites her lips, frustratedly.
“……looks like you have an affinity for fire huh. But, it looks like you’re not leaning that much towards it though”
Asch, who’d observed her condition for a bit, goes beside her and starts drawing a pentagram on the ground.

Elements, they refer to the type of energy the Magic Power emits.
Elemental Magic is represented by the five elements, Wood Fire Earth Metal Water. This relationship is often portrayed with a pentagram(pentacle). And then, there are also researchers who tout that Elemental Magic’s disposition is closer to Dark Magic than Light Magic because the (pentagram)pentacle is frequently used in Demon Summoning and the likes(At the current point in time, categorising it as Light Magic is the mainstream.

Also, it’s known that you would manifest an enormous amount of power in the case that you converted, for example, Fire and Water, that has a conflicting relationship. However, the difficulty and Magic Power is greater than performing an ordinary Elemental Conversion, so the typical view is that it doesn’t have good cost performance.

Having the subject she already understands explained to her, Jill got slightly pissed off. The theory is all in her head. However, she’s in a state where her practical is not catching up to it.
“No, that’s not it. What I’m saying is, how about you first practise the element of『Wood』”
“Wood? I’m capable of that, you know”
That element which governs all of creation, is the element that controls and accelerates the growth of the trees and plants.
“Right? Instead of trying doing it at one go, I think it’s better to first practise an element that’s relatively closer, and then move closer towards Water as a result”
“……I see”
At his rationale that makes perfect sense, Jill has no choice but to agree as well. At the same time, she felt her worst impression of him is also gradually unravelling somewhere in her heart.
“……I guess next would be, the Seal’s accuracy”
“Seal……I think I’m drawing it properly though”

Normally, there are at least two sequences, Chant and Seal, required to release Magic externally. The process of constructing the Magic Power, born from the Magic Power Field(Gate), inside the body, and verbalising the principles of Magic is called Chant, and the process of releasing the principles of Magic externally, through the drawing of a symbol is called Seal, but Chants typically have a high degree of freedom. As for why, it’s because the component of autosuggestion is strong, it’s no more than mediating the individual’s image with the principles of Magic, and verbalising it. Because of that, it’s completely meaningless even if one chanted high-level Magic unless it’s accompanied by the Magic Power’s attribute and quantity born from the Magic Power Field(Gate).
On the other hand, many Seals’ patterns have established and fixed forms; their patterns may be the same, but the force differs greatly depending on the way the symbol is drawn. The more intricate, the more meticulous, one draws the Seal, the more they’ll be able to multiply and manifest the Magic’s effect.

In an instant, Jill was letting those words slip out naturally.
At that overwhelming detailedness.
At the extraordinary exquisiteness.
The amount of ice released, was also more than any of the students in this class.
“Let’s practice Wood Element for an hour, and then the Seal for 30 minutes. As long as you can clear these two components, you’ll likely be able to cast Water Element magic as well”
“……yes”
Before she knew it, the diligent beautiful young girl harboured a sense of respect and reverence, and she responded honestly.
