“No. We are not dating”
The fact that Yae and I are intimate was exposed, and I am currently being interrogated. Nevertheless, everybody is convinced with the answer I just gaveーー

“What!?”
“There’s no way Nakamatsu-san will take the initiative to speak to somebody she isn’t even dating!”
Yae is a person with few words and does not talk to others for the most part. Especially, she rarely ever takes the initiative to speak to somebody. So the only person she will speak to is probably her lover; is Renya’s assertion.
“In any case, I will properly explain, so please listen”
“Alright, spit it out right away”
I got irritated by the sight of Renya sitting in his chair arrogantly before my eyes, so I decided that I will definitely not help him with his homework. It is Renya’s fault for not doing it.
“Firstly, Yae and I are what is called childhood friends. We are on good terms because our houses have been beside each other since the past, and we have been playing together since we are young, but that is all. Yae is like family to me, so we are by no means lovers”
That’s right, I get along well with Yae like family, but that is all. Rather, if either of us has those kinds of feelings, we cannot maintain the current state.
“And then Yae and I promised that we would not speak in school as long as we have no business with each other. The reason is that we didn’t want things to end up like how it is now”
Yae is short and expressionless for the most part, but she has a childish look and is adorable. I’m saying this with favouritism towards her, but I think she is a beautiful girl that ranks at the top of the school year. I knew that it would be a hassle if I was seen getting along well with such Yae, so I avoided making contact with her.
Nevertheless, what happened today is my fault for forgetting my lunchbox in the first place. Rather, I have to be grateful to Yae; since she went out of the way to bring my share for me.
“In other words, Kazunari and Nakamatsu-san are on good terms because you guys are childhood friends, but you guys are not lovers”
“Yeah”
“You guys were hiding it to avoid the hassle”
“Exactly. If you are so inclined, you can ask Yae as well”
I say and look in Yae’s direction, and she has people gathering there as well. It is all guys over at this side, and conversely, it is all girls over that side. Although she is expressionless as usual, she is slightly displeased. I am really sorry.
“……I understand now”
“I am glad you understand”
“And I have one question. Why did Nakamatsu-san bring the lunchbox that you forgot at home?”
The guys’ eyes that were looking relieved and convinced until just now completely turned into eyes that harboured nervousness. Renya is unnecessarily sharp today……
“I suppose my mother handed it to her. She knows that we are attending the same high school after all”
“I heard from your own mouth previously that your Okaa-san1 is working overseas, Kazunari. Did such a person conveniently come home today?”
Tsk, he didn’t get tricked by it huh. My father passed away when I was young, and my mother should indeed be currently working in Germany. I remember talking to Renya about it, but to think that he actually remembered. I wish he would make use of that memory on his studies though.
“And while we are at it, I also heard that your hometown is quite far away from this high school. In other words, Kazunari, you’re cohabiting with Nakamatsu-san, that’s how it is, right!?”
“……I hate sharp brats like you2”
“Seize this fellow!!”
I wonder why this fellow(Renya) can hit the nail on the head that, other than that, it’s also possible that it’s actually Yae who made the lunchbox and so forth.
While I’m avoiding reality in that manner, the well-built Murayama-kun grabbed my arms from behind and brought them to my back. I look completely like a criminal awaiting his sentence huh.
“Kazunari, your defense?”
“I cannot say the reason for the sake of Yae’s reputation, but we have special circumstances. Both our parents have agreed to it as well. And then, as I said just now, I treat Yae like family, so there is nothing fishy going on”
Even after that, they were saying to me, ‘I’m so jealous you’re cohabiting with a beautiful girl!’, ‘What’s the reason!’, and amongst that, ‘Tell me what kind of underwear Nakamatsu-san is wearing!’, but I have no idea at all; I just continued answering that there is nothing fishy going on. On top of us putting our private belongings in our room, we dry our laundry as well as underwear in our respective room, so I really don’t know. Or should I say; I won’t tell you even if I know. Rather, I am speechless that they have the mental power to ask something like that in front of their classmates.
In the end, thanks to my earnest response, or perhaps because it was time for club activities to start, the guys dispersed, and I was safely liberated. A few people were glaring over here intensely, but I can only shrug my shoulders. We have circumstances that we cannot help over here after all.
In any case, I shall eat my lunchbox and go home for now. There is a proficiency test tomorrow after all.
